The Center for Student Involvement and Leadership (CSIL) is excited to offer our first Alternative Spring Break service learning experience in Spring 2013, traveling to Memphis, Tennessee.
Our focus for this service trip is public health and health education, and we are tentatively committed to working with Hope House, a day care for children affected by HIV, Friends for Life, one of the oldest and most comprehensive AIDS service organizations in the Southern United States, and Grow Memphis, an organization dedicated to reclaiming urban areas and creating healthier communities through increasing access to healthy food and urban gardening.
We have room for 15 participants, with the trip leaving Saturday, March 16 from Iowa City, and returning Thursday, March 21. While cost estimates for students are rough ($250-$300), we will offer fundraising opportunities prior to the service trip to fundraise against that cost. Likewise, we are encouraging those who are selected from our applicant pool to apply for funding from the University of Iowa Student Government, which has money set aside specifically for students engaging in service-learning trips over spring break.
